1980 Kellogg's Baseball Card Backs #01 - #03

Finally finishing a look at the card backs from 1980 Kellogg's.  That means much less eye strain on future posts.

#03 - Mike Flanagan

He won the 1979 AL Cy Young Award with his 23 wins.  He added wins in the Playoffs and World Series.

The card mentions that he got within one out of a no-hitter in 1978.

Not on the card - Gary Alexander hit a home run to end the no-hit bid.

Also not on the card - late in his career he combined with a few other pitchers on a no-hitter.  He pitched one inning against the A's getting Mark McGwire and Harold Baines out.

Though he had a great career, he never received Cy Young votes in any other season.

#02 - Mike Schmidt

The card mentions that he won a Gold Glove.

Not on the card - he won four in a row from 1975 - 1979.  He ended up with 10 Gold Gloves by the time he retired.

The card also mentioned that he set an NL record for the least amount of singles (65) in a season for a player with 150+ games played in a season.  He hit .249 that year.

Has anyone gotten less than 65 hits since Schmidt did this in 1975?  This has happened about 30 times since Schmidt's "achievement".

Barry Bonds had only 49 singles in 2001.  He also had 73 homers, 2 triples and 32 doubles to go with on 49 singles in 153 games.  Oh, and 177 walks and 35 intentional walks.

I have trouble finding Mike Schmidt Kellogg's cards when I try making extra sets.

#01 - Ross Grimsley

Ross Grimsley got card #01.  Did any other Blue Jay or Expo ever get this honor?

Kellogg's didn't say much about him.  They mentioned that he contributed to the Expos playoff attempt.  It was also mentioned that he is no longer a power pitcher but he manages to figure out how to get the job done.

Not on the card - the Expos went 95-65 and finished two games behind the Pirates (98-64).  Notice that the Expos didn't play two of their games.  In the days without a wild-card game, it didn't matter if they played those canceled games since the Expos could only get to 97 wins anyway by winning those two games.

At this point the Expos had never made the playoffs.  They did make the playoffs in 1981 but Grimsley had been traded in 1980.
