Happy Birthday to Bob Robertson

I was surprised when I looked up the post-season statistics for Bob Robertson.  He played in 21 games and hit six homers.  Not bad for a guy with 115 career homers.

For players with at least 20 career home run games (and a Kellogg's card of course), only four players matched or surpassed his ratio of 1 homer every 3.5 games.  Can you name any of them?  I only would have guessed two of them.

His parents actually named him Robert.  Really?  At least when Billy Williams was born they named him Billy.

Another Billy Williams played in 1969 but his parents named him William.  Why?  Then I noticed that this guy played in the minors for 18 years before going 0-for-10 in the majors.

  2. Surprisingly, not only did the players above not hit homers at a higher rate than Robertson, none of them hit more homers in the post-season than Robertson hit in 1971 (all 6 of his homers).

Kingman played in the playoffs in his rookie year only. Remember, he spent a few seasons with the Cubs.

  3. How about a couple of A's. Jackson and Tenace. Garvey maybe

  4. Jackson had 18 homers in 77 games, Tenace hit 4 in 42 games - all in the same season and Garvey hit 11 in 55 games. The last one by Garvey let to the famous line - "F****** Steve Garvey". None hit them at a higher rate than Robertson.

  5. It's great to see people thinking about it instead of looking it up on the internet.

    1. My last try here. One of the Robinsons. Frank or Brooks, Reggie Smith?

  7. Yes, Frank Robinson is correct. Kirk Gibson, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig had greater ratios and Robinson's was equal to Robertson's ratio.
