Is Anyone Here Getting This in the Mail?

This sold on ebay sometime today or yesterday.  A nice item but it was out of reach for me.  The third sheet would be very tempting if it showed up.  Why?  Five Cubs are on that sheet.

Another Kellogg's Pack Was Opened

Vintage Breaks opened a curled pack that showed Jose Laboy.  Here is the breakdown.

No surprises at all.  

Has anyone seen how much it cost to get in on one of these breaks?  The spots in a break seem quite expensive, especially when there are only a few good cards that are possible in a pack.  The odds for Kellogg's cards has to be better than the odds in a large Topps set.  

Let me know if you see a Kellogg's pack on any of the sites that do this.

Not My Favorite Card Show Outcome

Daughter spends $10 of my money

and I spend $3. 

Yes, I didn't negotiate at all on the price since the card was decent.  There is a small scratch and the color overall is nice. 

It would have been a win for me but I won't be eating any of those Girl Scout cookies.  I like them, but if I start eating them I can guarantee that none will remain a few minutes later, especially if they are refrigerated.

The card show was across the border into Indiana.  I hadn't been there before and I enjoyed it.  Denny McLain was there signing autographs.  They made some announcements about him signing but they didn't mentioned the cost so that was odd. 

It would good to see different dealers, but I didn't see much that interested me.  I probably would have searched some of the dime boxes if my daughter wasn't with me.

At least I got something nice in the mail this week.  Sorry, I am too lazy to take it out for nice picture.  It is in a top loader and there is a plastic bag over that.  Maybe when I get a better frame for it I will take a decent picture.

I'm going to have to start selling some items since I went way over budget buying something like this.  Don't expect those items to be Kellogg's cards very often.

How to Tell When You've Spent Too Much Time Sorting

I worked on 1970 Kellogg's football cards today.  It is definitely time to finish this.  I've just got to work on the small 1991 and 1992 all-star sets, the 1971 football cards and the Stop N Go cards. 

How do you know when you've spent too much time sorting?

1.  Driving down the street today I saw a license plate that had part of what I assumed to be Dennis Eckersley's last name and the number nine.  Whey is that noteworthy?  Well, if you have my problem you'd immediately think that Eckersley is card number 9 in the 1979 set.  True story.  Yes, I should probably seek help.

2.  While sorting through cards, I realized that even though I don't know card number of certain players, I can easily figure out the number based on where the card is on a nine-pocket page.  1970 Billy Williams.  I knew the card was in the 30 - 39 range.  Now I know that it is #37 because I can picture it on the set in progress that I organized. 

I use decimal, base 16 and binary at work, but I think I am now better at groupings of nine.  Another instance where Schoolhouse Rock has helped me in life.

3.  Playing the before/after game when putting a duplicate in a top loader into a box or stack of cards.  To place a Billy Williams (#37 in 1970) into the box just take a guess near the middle of the cards.  Then, if you've spent too much time with your cards you can probably immediately know if you need to go forward or back in the group of cards to place Williams correctly.

Has anyone ever figured out how to get rid of the cracks?

1970 Sorting and Set Building - Any Traders for Really Clean Commons?

After sorting 1971s it was nice to see some clean, sharp corners on a Kellogg's card again with the 1970 cards.  Having no factory set in 1971 sure shows since clean cards don't show up often.

As usual, the stars will be difficult for me because I don't have it in me to pay a lot for one card.  I don't see that changing anytime soon unless the card would allow me to complete a set.

I have duplicates to trade of many commons.  The commons that I need are - C. May, Singer, Reichardt, Powell, Horlen, Epstein, M. Alou, Cullen, Lolich, McLain.  I don't need to Cubs but I would certainly go for them too.  Does anyone have some of these in nice shape sitting around? 

I don't know if I have the motivation to check out 1971 Kellogg's football cards next  It will be more of the damaged cards to go through.  I think I have the entire set but I'm not sure if they are all clean.  More next time.

As usual, all of the cards are from the last 15 cards in the set (61 - 75).  Did more packs get issued from this number range? 

There are only three Hall of Famers in the last 15 cards.  In this break all three of them were in this pack.  Nice.  Too often, these packs have no Hall of Famers. 

Here is a breakdown of each 15-card range -

#01 - #15 - Rose, McCovey, Seaver, Sutton, Mays, Marichal, F. Robinson

#16 - #30 - G. Perry, B. Robinson, Aparicio, Clemente, Stargell

#31 - #45 - Jackson, Williams, Banks, Santo, Brock

#46 - #60 - Carew, Kaline, Bench

#61 - #75 - Killebrew, Gibson, Morgan

The first 15 cards give you the best chance of getting the big stars.  The last two sequences have the least chance. 

I've now found data of 31 packs that have been opened.  Every pack has followed the same pattern.  All cards in these packs has fallen into one of the 15-card ranges shown above.

This pack had Tommie Agee on the front.  Since he is card #11 I knew that the odds were good for getting Rose, McCovey, Seaver, Sutton, Mays, Marichal, Frank Robinson.

I'm still working on where the split is in the packs and this pack reinforced things since there were no cards in the #16 - 30 range at all.

The pack contained Agee, Marichal, Sutton, Mays, Stottlemyre and Frank Robinson.

I've only opened one pack with a card on front having a low number.  It was also a pack with Agee on the front.  My pack had McNally, Seaver, Wynn, Mays and Maloney. 

All of the cards from both packs were among the first 15 cards in the set. 

Maybe I Should Sell My Unopened 1970 Kellogg's Packs?

I found that the pack-busting site vintagebreaks.com has a 1970 Kellogg's six-card pack available.  Once six people pay for a random spot the pack will be opened.  The cost per card - $30.  For those too tired to do the math, that's $180 for the pack. 

I have a decent number of packs, but I don't think that I've paid more than $30 for any pack.  Should I be selling my duplicates to these folks?

The pack has Tommy Harper on the front.  Harper is card #74 in the set.  Based on that I am going to guess that the only stars possible in the pack are as follows - Harmon Killebrew, Bob Gibson and Joe Morgan.  Denny McLain was a star then but he's not considered a star now.

This is the pack from my collection, not the one on the website.

Give me your best guess as to who will be the six cards.  I will follow this and let you know which six cards are pulled from this pack.

My guess - Harper, Harrelson, Lolich, Perry, J., Gibson, Bunker.  Cards that won't be in the pack - all cards from #1 to #59.

I need to get my old backup file restored so I can look at the 1970 Kellogg's sheets. 

They Are Opening 1970 Kellogg's Packs

This vintage breaks stuff is crazy.  They get six people to pay for a spot in the break and then they open a 1970 Kellogg's pack.  Does anyone know what they charged per slot?

I went back from now to 12-28 and they opened 14 packs that I found.  Maybe I missed some?  I am adding that data to what I've gotten from the packs that I've opened. 

I would love to accumulate more data on what comes in each pack.  If anyone has the contents of a pack, especially in order, please send them along.

I think that I stored pictures of the 1970 Proof sheets on an external hard drive before my Macbook crashed.  I will try to load that here and see how the packs compare to the sheets.

One of my goals is to get a 75 unopened 1970 Kellogg's packs - one with each player in the set on the front.  That might be difficult if these guys keep opening all of the cheaper packs.  Will all of the other ones soar in price due to this trend towards opening packs?
