I don't know how George Foster got the nickname Yahtzee but it is a good one. I couldn't find another player with that one. That's a lot better than Lefty which is hardly unique.
Yahtzee was a game we played a lot as kids. Even my dad would get into the games. Everyone had their own way of shaking the cup that contained the dice. Did I mention that this was before anyone played computer versions of games?
The middle of his career sure was great. It doesn't look as good since the 1981 season was shortened. In 1981 he had 90 RBIs in 108 games, which was how many the team played. He was on a pace for 135 RBIs that year.
In a six-year stretch he had MVP votes in five of them with finishes of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 12th. When he didn't get votes his stats were 25-93-.273 in 144 games.
The 1981 Reds had the distinction of having the best record in all of baseball. That was great except they didn't make the playoffs. They lost in the first half standings to the Dodgers whose 36-21 record just edged out the Reds record of 35-21. They lost the second half to the Astros by 1.5 games while playing on less game than Houston. Since the Reds dominated the 1970s no one around me felt too bad that the Reds were four games ahead in the 1981 combined standings.
