Near my house I see a sign for Joe Pepitone Realtors. It turns out that it is a different guy, but Pepitone has always been popular in Chicago even though he only had a few seasons with the Cubs.
Pepitone was a colorful character in baseball and then some. He played in Japan, partied too much, found trouble, etc. He was a three-time all-star and three-time Gold Glove award winner.
His celebrity certainly continued far beyond his playing days. He's known for being mentioned numerous times in Seinfeld episodes. (see seinfeldscripts.com
1. At a fantasy camp Kramer intentionally hits Pepitone with a pitch leading to a brawl where Kramer punches Mickey Mantle. George's great response is that "His whole life is a fantasy camp".
2. As an assistant GM George suggests more special days at the ballpark like Joe Pepitone Day.
3. When Kramer is giving a tour of Central Park in a hansom cab he mentions that the park was designed by Joe Pepitone.
I will have to see if other players mentioned in Seinfeld episodes have Kellogg's cards. Everyone knows about Keith Hernandez, a.k.a Pretty Boy.
