I haven't picked up any 1979 Kellogg's cards in a long time. I'm still searching for variations on the back with the trademark and team logos. This sets comes in two slightly different border colors - one is white and the other is somewhere between white and yellow. The latter seems to be the factory set cards - I have all of those variations.
The sharp, white bordered cards seem to have the variations. I really like the Phillies variation since the logo changed from the two guys to a boring "P". Check out the older logo below.
I'm glad this lot was not just from a factory set since it had this Carlton. Unfortunately, the other Phillies were the more common version with the scripted "P" on the back.
The Grimsley on the left is what I seem with those cards that come from factory sets. Does anyone have factory sets with the example from the right? I know that there were three printings, but I'm not sure about the details of each printing.
The back of the card shown above matches the card on the right above.
A look at Kellogg's cereal cards and related items from all sports.

They had 3 printings due to the fact that Cereal sales went threw the roof..Boxes were flying off the shelf..Thats when kelloggs went to a second printer to print more cards to keep up with demand..
ReplyDeleteThe second printing had the @ R below the scarf (Tony ) but NO trademark next to the team logo...as the 3rd printing had a @ R next to the team logo.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that great information. Were some printings (1st, 2nd, 3rd) for factory sets only?
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the thin stock, red text / bright, white background cards were only found in packs, not factory sets. Is that true?
Were the orange text / yellowed trim cards only found in factory sets? Which print run were these cards?
Do I need to collect variations of the unopened packs?
The second version of the Dodgers cards and the Phillies are hard to find unopened for some reason...
DeleteI certainly agree about these teams being more difficult to find. I don't see lots of unopened 1979s. Maybe they are not brought out since they don't go for big bucks yet.
DeleteKnowing all of this, I've got a lot of work to do to collect all of the unopened ones.
The yellowed cards were only from the factory...But ALL 3 printings were in boxes as some unopened 3rd series were listed this past week..
ReplyDeleteThanks for adding so much information on these cards.
